DNA Testing - Orchid GeneScreen®

AmHealth Services partners with GeneScreen, the second largest provider of paternity testing in the U.S. and the first national laboratory to offer DNA as the preferred method for highly-accurate paternity testing. GeneScreen has numerous state contracts as either the sole provider or in a preferred vendor status. Currently, their laboratories in Dallas, Dayton and Sacramento handle more than 75,000 cases each year.

AmHealth is proud to be part of the Orchid GeneScreen network - the largest provider of paternity DNA testing in the U.S. and Canada.

GeneScreen guarantees a probability of paternity greater than 99% or a three probe

exclusion (no match on three loci). We offer a variety of paternity tests, including a non-

maternal test in which the father and the child are the sole individuals tested, neo-natal

and pre-natal tests, and a test which uses samples collected from grandparents to

  establish paternity.

DNA analysis requires blood or tissue samples. Tissue samples, usually buccal cells,

can be collected quickly and painlessly by gently swabbing the inside of the mouth.  In

most cases, test results are returned in 15 days or less.

All information is kept strictly confidential, reports are mailed only to those individuals

involved in the testing or their legal representatives. Telephone and fax reporting is not

  permitted.

  Testing Standards
GeneScreen shall perform genetic testing to ensure a minimum probability of paternity

of 99.0% or to establish an exclusion.

To ensure that cases are accurately reported all results are interpreted by at least two

  (2) qualified individuals. Results are checked visually as well as by computer analysis

for confirmation of matching DNA fragments. Initial review is typically performed by a

DNA Analyst, followed by computer sizing by a second qualified analyst with final

review by the Laboratory Director or Associate Laboratory Director(s).

GeneScreen has chosen to provide our clients with testing performed using Polymerase

Chain Reaction (PCR). PCR testing for paternity determination has recently become

the method of choice by a majority of the laboratories performing such services.

At a minimum, GeneScreen would run a paternity test utilizing eight (8) genetic

markers. GeneScreen would continue testing until the contract requirement of the

minimum probability of paternity of 99.0% is met or a minimum of three (3) exclusions

is achieved. As a quality control method, two known DNA samples are tested along

with the case samples on each gel run.

  Statistical Calculations and Reporting
Once film analysis is completed, the results (fragment sizes) of the computerized

scanning are automatically downloaded into a specially designed computer program for

statistical calculations. This proprietary paternity calculation and report writer software

package has virtually eliminated the administrative burden following data analysis.

  Validation
During GeneScreen’s history, our databases have withstood rigorous challenges

throughout the peer review process by several DNA experts and population geneticists

in the course of trial discovery and courtroom testimony in dozens of cases. Statistical

information derived from these databases compares favorably with several other

databases constructed in various locations throughout the United States. Statistical

findings using GeneScreen’s database have been successfully introduced at trial in

more than 200 cases. There are no circumstances in which GeneScreen’s database

was not found to be admissible for trial in either civil or criminal proceedings.
